Praise from Guardiola for ‘Street Player’ Cherki Before Villarreal Fixture
Manchester City boss Guardiola, previously worked with legends such as Lionel Messi, Iniesta, and Xavi, stated that Cherki ranks among the most talented players he has ever seen and is sure the youngster will embrace the collective approach at the Premier League side.
Recovery Update
Cherki, who signed for City from the French club for a fee of £30.5 million in time for the FIFA Club World Cup in June, has featured in just seven outings so far. After recovering from a thigh injury, he had a short appearance in the 2-0 victory against the Toffees last matchday, during which he came close to assisting a goal for Erling Haaland.
Now, he has travelled to Villarreal where he earn his European first appearance for the club.
Manager’s Perspective
Although urging patience, Guardiola was at a loss to articulate his talent, suggesting that the biggest doubt could be how he fits in within the setup and gets used to performing simpler tasks effectively.
“Cherki is one of the greatest stars I’ve witnessed throughout my coaching life,” Guardiola said, puffing out his cheeks. “On a technical level he is top-class. The challenge is how he settles and how he reads each situation, what every action needs. He started during the Club World Cup, but then there was a break. We have to go gradually, though his skill is obvious: I believe that most of the time when possession finds him, the attack becomes more dangerous.
“It’s not necessary for him to have to produce spectacular moves; he should simply make basic plays. Still, he owns that something. For example, the through ball for Erling in the final moments, plus countless other things he is capable of.
“He is a player unfazed by stress when receiving the ball. He is like a street footballer. He shows annoyance – ‘pass it to me’ – if he’s not involved, obviously. He hasn’t been a brief period with us; it requires some time since it’s vital to build chemistry.”
When asked if the youngster would fit within the group dynamic, the manager answered: “Without a doubt. These kinds of players have great feel, highly intelligent. They see everything.”
Recognition for González
Guardiola additionally commended Nico González, who is expected to play in the heart of the park. The team’s usual starter has travelled to his former club, and should be to be honoured before the match in Villarreal, though he misses out with a muscle problem.
Guardiola noted: “I feel that Nico is improving steadily. We are extremely satisfied with his attitude and he should keep getting better. He is refined, thoughtful, a lovely guy. His family have to be immensely pleased about the man and player he is. He must be himself, yet while competing alongside top players, you always learn. You realize how you can get better, though Nico should stick to his style, for sure.”
Squad’s Improving Performance
Guardiola also was effusive regarding the team’s recent performances. “We are scoring plenty of strikes, generating lots of opportunities, and we are letting in very few. There have been only eight league games plus two in European competition, though I sense that each game is better than the one before and is worse than the upcoming.
“We talk about a lot ways to enhance and methods to understand situations more effectively. I have great belief in the players and I’m aware the individuals are training intensely. We are displaying strong shape.”
